About Brian
Initially, I painted to allow myself a creative outlet and as a means to remain connected to nature, after the onset of a chronic illness forced me to stop guiding wilderness trips. As my work progressed, my practice evolved into an exploration of medium and took on the role of an expressive journal, often drawing on the memory of a feeling of a place.
I tended to employ a slightly wild and erratic brushstroke, as my condition had made consistency and precision unattainable, creating welcomed accidental moments in colour. While I've adapted and in part recovered, the awe I now have for the world around me has grown through years of observing light—so this has all felt circular and rewarding. I continue to work intuitively, rarely with a plan in mind, eager to watch marks build up and paint flow into landscapes, abstracts and florals.
